African American Heritage Trail in Florence, Massachusetts

The African-American Heritage Trail commemorates the Florence of Sojourner Truth’s time. The trail begins Sojourner Truth Memorial Statue at the corner of Park and Pine Streets.

The site for the Sojourner Truth memorial statue is a former small city park at the corner of Pine and Park Streets in Florence. The city donated the site for the statue in November 2001.

The Florence area was nearly ten percent African-American in 1850. By 1855 most African American families had left Nonotuck Street where they had been working at the factories of the Willistons and Alfred Critchlow.
